MOT appeals and complaints

If you think an MOT result is wrong, speak to the test centre before repairs begin. In England, Scotland and Wales, appeals are handled by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA).

Before arranging repairs: GOV.UK says to leave the vehicle unrepaired until the appeal has finished. Changes can affect the evidence. If the vehicle may be unsafe, do not drive it; discuss safe transport with the garage or DVSA.

Check the deadline

What you are challenging Time limit
A failure you believe is incorrect 14 working days after the test
A pass involving a corrosion problem 3 months after the test
A pass involving another defect 28 days after the test

How to start an appeal

  1. Keep the MOT result and explain your concern to the test centre.
  2. Open the official GOV.UK appeal guidance and use its current complaint form.
  3. Send the form to DVSA within the relevant deadline and follow its instructions.

DVSA says it will contact you within five days. If it rechecks a disputed failure, a full test fee is payable and is refunded if the appeal succeeds. A recheck of a disputed pass has no additional test fee.

Service complaints and other disputes

The same official guidance explains how to contact DVSA about an MOT service complaint. An appeal reviews the test result; a separate compensation dispute may require Trading Standards or independent legal advice.

Northern Ireland: use the DVA process through nidirect. The DVSA deadlines above describe the Great Britain process.
