The maximum MOT fee for a standard car in England, Scotland and Wales is £54.85. A test centre may charge less. These limits cover the MOT test itself, not servicing or repairs.

Will I pay for a retest?
- Leave the vehicle at the test centre for repairs: a partial retest within 10 working days is free.
- Take it away and return by the end of the next working day: a free partial retest applies only to the items listed in the official rules.
- Take it away and return within 10 working days: a partial retest may be charged.
- Other cases: a full test and full fee are normally required.
Read the official retest conditions and eligible items before arranging repairs. A valid earlier certificate does not make an unsafe vehicle legal to drive.
Before accepting a quote
Ask the garage to separate the test charge, any service, repairs and any retest charge. Confirm the vehicle class and whether repairs need your approval before work starts.
Northern Ireland: charges and arrangements differ. Use nidirect’s MOT and vehicle testing guidance.
